The Medical Alarm FAQ

For those who want to better understand their system.

Ron Dermer is an EMS tech who has responded to dozens of Medical Alarm calls and knows first hand just how valuable these life saving devices can be. Ron says he is surprised by how many great Medical Alarm features the owners don't seem to know about.Ron isn't shy about his affection for Medical Alarms. He told me, "I think everyone over the age of 62 should be required to have a Medical Alarm in their home. I've arrived at too many homes to find people who have been lying on the floor for hours waiting to be discovered. Seniors hate being bothered by check-up calls from their children, yet they want the freedom of living alone. That's a recipe for disaster."

The Medical Alarm FAQ is an effort to provide answers to many of the questions that Medical Alarm owners might have, some insight for those considering the purchase of a Medical Alarm, and to make everyone more aware of the many life saving features that are standard on most Medical Alarm systems.

Its nice to know there is someone as dedicated as Ron standing by to answer those calls when accidents happen.

In an indepth review of Medical Alarm equipment and services on the current issue of the CAC website, the Consumer Advisory Council cites medical advances and longer life spans as the reason for a historic rise in seniors living alone.

The eight page review provides consumers with a broad range of information to better understand medical alarm equipment and the monitoring services that respond to calls. The review includes detailed criteria for selecting a Medical Alarm, choosing a Medical Alarm provider, and suggests questions to ask about the Medical Alarm monitoring service before making a purchase.

MedGuides' Medical Alarm Guide

A Series Of Brief Guides For Seniors To Make Better Buying Decisions.

{MedGuides}, which offers a series of brief guides for seniors to make better buying decisions, has added a pair of guides for Medical Alarm and Medic Alert services.

According to MedGuides spokesperson, Rick Davidson, the additions were a result of consumer comments that they didn't understand the difference between the two services. Davidson said, "the confusion between the two services is so great that a search on Google for 'Medic Alert' displays many advertisements from Medical Alarm providers."

Both the Medical Alarm and Medic Alert guides provide clear and concise product definitions to help consumers better understand the difference between the two services and the products which support them.

If you don't know your Medical Alarm from your Medic Alert, MedGuides is a nice little resource to check out.

Complete Guide To Medical Alarm Equipment

Consumer guide to medical alarm equipment.

The Complete Guide To Medical Alarm Equipment is designed for those who are interested in obtaining a better understanding of how Medical Alarm systems work. It provides detailed information about system features and options.

By design, the Guide To Medical Alarm Equipment lacks any coverage of monitoring services. It has a singular focus of providing the best available information about Medical Alarm equipment.

The site has four sections that provide consumers with complete descriptions of the Linear PERS-2400 Medical Alarm system, options and features. I understand that as time permits, information about other systems will be added to the site to enable consumers to make a reasonable feature comparison when shopping.

As the site grows, plans for expansion include an indepth look at programming various systems. That should be a relief for those of us who still can't channel surf our televsions without assistance.

The Complete Guide To Medical Alarm Equipment isn't quite so complete yet, but it looks very promising.

Consumer Advisory Council Awards Seal of Approval® to Medical Alarm USA

Each year the Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) reviews dozens of requests across a range of consumer product categories. The CAC Seal Of Approval® recognizes the selected business for excellence in product and service to consumers.

(PRWEB) November 18, 2004 -- Medical Alarm USA, a nationwide provider of medical alarm systems for the home, has received the coveted CAC Seal Of Approval® for excellence in product and service to consumers. Recipients are required to meet a broad range of criteria relating to product quality, performance, service and consumer oriented sales approach.

Ray Dillard, CAC Approvals Committee Chairman, indicated that the committee became aware of Medical Alarm USA while conducting a review of Medical Alarm services published on the current issue of the CAC website. Dillard said, "As we reviewed the various alarm products available to seniors, it soon became clear that the Linear PERS-2400, offered by Medical Alarm USA, is by far the best choice for independent seniors. That got us looking at the company itself."

The company was surprised to learn of the interest expressed by the Council. Company vice president, Francine Intile, said, "You know, we've been offering great products and terrific service for years and nothing like this has ever happened. I guess its true, you do right by people and it comes back to you. Its very gratifying to receive such recognition of our efforts."

What really made the difference, according to Dillard, was a review of customer inquiries. "We were very pleased", says Dillard, "at just how low key their sales presentations tend to be. They make it easy for callers to obtain the information they need to make a good consumer choice."

Medical Alarms: Why you might want a medical alarm

Reports suggest that one in three elderly people fall once a year. Though the majority of these falls are not serious, the person may not be able to get up on their own and may not be discovered for some time by which their condition may have worsened considerable. This is when medical alarms prove their worth. Falling, and the fear of falling, can cause elderly people to loose confidence in their ability to cope on their own and inhibit what they do.

Caring for a loved one yourself is not always possible. Family members rarely stay in the area in which they were brought up. Even if possible, it is a difficult task and one that not all family members feel ready to undertake. Similarly, just because a person is elderly and perhaps a bit wobbly on their feet it does not mean they need constant attention. A medical alarm allows them to maintain some independence whilst also protecting them in case of an accident.

The medical alarm consists of a simple electronic transmitter in the form of a pendant worn around the neck or wrist. A notorious place for falls, the pendant can even be worn in the bath or shower, as it is fully waterproof. If a fall occurs and the button on the pendant is pressed, a signal is transmitted to the external monitoring station. Within a minute, they will have received your alarm and dialed your home number. They will then talk to you via a console installed in your house or through activating the speakerphone on your normal home phone. In this way you can describe what the problem is and the appropriate action can be taken. This might only be alerting your neighbors, or it may be sending the emergency services. If your alarm is triggered and you cannot speak, the paramedics will be sent automatically. It can also be activated up to 300ft from the house so if you fell in the garden you could still summon help.

Medical alarms reduce the severity of domestic accidents and cost much less then buying full time home help. If you or a member of your family feel at risk from falling in, or around your home then a medical alarm will give you the confidence you need to continue your domestic life.

Medical Alarm - a Necessity

Medical alarms have become an absolute necessity for those people who are over the age of 65 and lead a solitary lifestyle. More than 12 million US elders are reported to live alone and more than 4 million seniors suffer critical emergency situations without help at hand. The old age itself being a state of decreased physical and mental capabilities can also be at best judged to be a medical condition. Medical alarms come into assist such helpless seniors as well as people who need emergency medical attention at short notice.

Best Candidate for Medical Alarm Usage
Mainly the following persons can suitably benefit from a medical alarm.

1. People who live alone or those who have limited hours of care giver access.
2. People using orthotics or other orthopedic mobility devices.
3. People with history of falls or sudden acute seizures.
4. People with recent history of hospitalization or convalescing patients.
5. People living in unsafe neighborhoods especially elders.

Benefits of Medical Alarm Usage

It has been recorded that with the aid of medical alarm and its subsequent help in summoning immediate medical help, the number of hospitalizations do come down. It helps in instilling a sense of security and mental preparedness in patients bringing down their stress levels so that they tend to recoup from their illness with greater speed.

Medical Alarm Equipment - What it is and How to Use It

What Sort of a Gadget is This Medical Alarm?

Medical alarm equipment comes in the form of a set-up consisting of a medical alarm button, a basic unit or console (or a full telephone in place of it), a connecting cord and a plug.

You may wish to know - where is the medical alarm button to be fixed? Well, it doesn't require fixing anywhere! It can be worn by the user in any of these three ways: one, she/he may use it as a pendant, hanging from her neck: two, as a smart wrist watch: or three, simply as a nice-looking accessory attached with a clip to the belt or a pocket. In case of any mishap, this button is to be pressed for help to arrive. But how does it work?

The button is connected to the basic unit or the telephone. This telephone immediately sends out a message to the medical alarm response center and a voice-to-voice communication channel gets opened between the response center associate and the user. The basic unit or the telephone is equipped with a very loud speaker and a highly sensitive microphone, making communication ultra-smooth, hassle-free and accurate.

Home Security, Medical Alert and Alarm Systems: Advancements for Seniors and Shut-Ins

Senior citizens and shut-ins no longer need to fear living alone. A retired Southern California police officer explains how improvements in two-way voice technologies can enhance the physical an emotional well being of those who have little choice but to spend most of their time at home. Watchdog Security Services, a home security and medical alert systems provider, serves the needs of homeowners in the following Riverside and San Bernardino communities: Riverside, San Bernardino, Hemet, Menifee, Wildomar, Murrieta, Temecula, Corona, Palm Springs,.Moreno Valley, Redlands, Victorville, Ontario, Rialto, Lake Elsinore, Rancho Cucamonga, Sun City, and Chino Hills.

RIVERSIDE CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2004 -- Mabel is 86 and fiercely independent. Widowed for seven years and coping with rheumatoid arthritis, she still loves living in the cozy single-story home she and her husband Frank built nearly 40 years ago.

Her daughter, Jane, her husband, Paul, and their two young children live just an hour away, and Mabel enjoys her grandchildren’s frequent visits. She has a close-knit circle of friends and plays bridge once a week at the local senior center.

While Mabel still misses her husband, she still finds life satisfying. Positive attitude aside, her arthritis seems to get a little worse with each passing month and she worries about one day falling, breaking a bone and, living alone, not being able to summon help.

Jane and Paul, a police officer, are also concerned about Mabel’s declining health, as well as the increasing number of burglaries and assaults on seniors in Mabel’s part of town. They have suggested that Mabel consider moving to an assisted living facility but she is adamant about maintaining her independence and staying where she is most comfortable – in her own home.

Mabel’s situation is typical of many seniors and shut-ins who now find themselves living alone. The need to remain as independent as possible conflicts with the twin realities of declining health and increasing crime.

Advances in home security and medical alert technologies are helping solve those legitimate conflicts. According to Nigel Smithers, President and CEO of Watchdog Protection Industries, Inc. recent advances in “two way voice” technologies are providing improved peace of mind for not only senior citizens and shut-ins, but their loved ones as well.

“These new two-way voice systems combine the best features of traditional security alarms and dedicated medical alert devices,” he says. “When a subscriber experiences a medical emergency and cannot reach a phone, he or she has only to press a button on a neck pendant or wristband and the alarm monitoring company operator activates the ‘two way’ feature.

“This puts the subscriber in direct voice contact with an operator using a speaker/microphone built into the alarm panel which can be heard from anywhere in the home. If the victim has fallen and cannot get up, for example, the operator immediately dispatches local medical personnel to the home, all the while reassuring the victim that help is on the way by maintaining voice dialogue through the alarm panel. The built-in microphone is very sensitive, and can pick up even a whisper from anywhere within a 2500 square foot home,” Smithers says.

The technology goes a lot further than that, Smithers explains. “Part of the system features a ’lack of use’ sensor, which alerts the monitoring station if the user fails to arm or disarm the alarm within a specified period of time. Thus, if the client cannot get out of bed or has lapsed into a coma, emergency personnel and relatives are notified right away.”

The same features help protect the user in case of a break-in. “If the alarm system is armed and someone attempts to gain entry, a siren will sound and the monitoring operator will activate the two-way voice channel., attempting to contact the client,” Smithers says.

If the client answers and provides a predetermined password indicating that all is well, no further action is taken. On the other hand, if the client does not respond, the operator will listen for signs of a struggle or an intruder moving around and immediately dispatch local law enforcement. Knowing that a true emergency is occurring, police can respond in enough time, and in enough force, to effectively deal with the situation.

“The real break throughs are cost and ease of use,” Smithers says. “Compared to mere medical alert systems, this advanced technology can be obtained for just a couple more dollars a month which helps those on fixed incomes to take advantage of a full range of services without breaking the budget.”

“They are not the least bit complicated either so they are also very user friendly,” he says.

As a former police officer himself with over 20 years experience, Smithers knows first-hand the difference between responding to a burglary in progress where a victim’s life and safety are in peril, or to a mere alarm activation which may or may not be a false alarm.According to Smithers, “Combined with wireless security technology, these new two-way voice systems offer reliability and fast, clean installations. The user’s privacy is assured, as the two-way voice feature is only activated when a security sensor is tripped or when the user calls for help by pressing either a button on the control panel or on the neck pendant.”

“The result is that seniors like Mabel can enjoy living independently with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are no longer really alone, even if they live alone,” he concluded.

LifeGuardian Medical Alert and Alarm Systems: Life Safety and Home Security for Seniors and Shut-Ins

Senior citizens and shut-ins no longer need to fear living alone. Improvements in two-way voice and wireless technologies can enhance the physical an emotional well being of those who have little choice but to spend most of their time in and around their home. LifeGuardian Medical Alarm system, a leading medical alert systems provider, serves the needs of seniors and the disabled throughout all of North America.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 20, 2004 -- Phyllis is 82 and fiercely independent. Widowed for this past year and coping with arthritis in her hip, she still loves living in the cozy single-story home she and her husband George lived in for the past 20 years.

Her one son lives in another state, and while he visits as often as work allows, she now spends much of her time alone. She has a close-knit circle of friends and swims once or twice a week at the local YMCA.

While Phyllis misses her husband of 55 years, she still finds life active and satisfying. Positive attitude aside, her arthritis seems to get a little worse with each passing month and she worries about one day falling, breaking a bone and, living alone, not being able to summon help.

Her family is also concerned about Phyllis’s declining health, as well as the increasing number of burglaries and assaults on seniors in Phyllis’s part of town. They have suggested that she consider moving to an assisted living facility but she is adamant about maintaining her independence and staying where she is most comfortable – in her own home.

Phyllis’s situation is typical of many seniors and shut-ins who now find themselves living alone. Children are grown and often live hours away. The need to remain as independent as possible conflicts with the twin realities of declining health and increasing crime.

Advances in home security and medical alert technologies are helping solve those legitimate conflicts. According to Thomas Franks, President and CEO of Clayton Communications, Inc. Recent advances in “two way voice” technologies are providing improved peace of mind for not only senior citizens and shut-ins, but their loved ones as well.

“The patented new LifeGuardian™ two-way voice system provides unmatched convenience, longest range and security.” he says. “When a subscriber experiences a medical emergency in or around the house and cannot reach a phone, he or she has only to press a small waterproof button on a neck pendant or wristband and the LifeGuardian medical alert monitoring company operator receives the call and activates the ‘two way’ voice feature.

The built-in microphone is very sensitive, and can pick up even a whisper from anywhere within a 2500 square foot home,” Franks says.

An optional system feature is the wireless smoke detector. Unlike self-installed smoke detectors that will melt to the floor before notifying anyone, The LifeGuardian™ medical alarm system loudly announces “FIRE..FIRE” and immediately notifies the monitoring center of the fire and smoke. If no response is heard from the home, the monitoring center will immediately dispatch the fire department.

“The LifeGuardian™ medical alarm system is the first system of its type designed to be set-up by the user or their family.” Franks says. “The system comes ready to plug and test. Typically, set-up takes just a few minutes. When a subscriber signs-up with LifeGuardian, they print out the New Subscriber form right off of the LifeGuardian web site. They complete a two page confidential information form and FAX it back to the LifeGuardian medical alarm center.

LifeGuardian™ technicians pre-program and test each system, sets-up the subscribers account with the monitoring center and ships the new system to the subscriber anywhere in the United States and Canada. The LifeGuardian™ Quick Set-up Guide assures trouble free hook-up and provides free technical support if there is a problem.

“The result is that seniors like Phyllis can enjoy living independently with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they are no longer really alone, even if they live alone,” he concluded. “It also provides family members with a new sense of peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe and secure.”

Franks cautions “Don’t wait until your senior family member has a bad fall to consider such an obvious safety measure. If they are over the age of 75 and living alone, statistically they are at risk of a serious accident. Prior falls, medications and medical conditions dramatically increase the likelihood of another major accident.”

One industry study determined that seniors who have a medical alarm system stay independent and at home an average of seven years longer! When one considers that assisted living facilities may cost $125/day and skilled nursing facilities even more, a LifeGuardian™ medical alarm system becomes a wise investment.

The LifeGuardian™ Medical Alarm System comes complete for just $39.95/month and a one-time activation fee of only $49.95. It includes a lifetime equipment warranty and a 30 day unconditional satisfaction guarantee. Best of all, no multi-year or annual contract is required.
